SUPER Pit mine operator Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines is reducing mining rates and could cut jobs, in the wake of two separate rock falls earlier in the month on the eastern wall of the pit.

The rock fall at Kalgoorlie's Super Pit could affect jobs

The rock falls, on May 14 and 15 caused KCGM to temporarily suspend operations at the pit.

With an exclusion zone in place around the rock fall area KCGM said it will be forced to reduce the workforce over the next few months, to ensure the safety of the 1100 employees and contractors on site.

The miner warned its employees and contractors on May 28 that there could be job losses and a hiring freeze. However, it did not give a figure or confirm if the losses would be temporary or permanent.

According to KCGM general manager Cecile Thaxter, both work and mining rates will be reduced so experts can fully understand the impact of the rock fall on the mine planning and sequencing.
