ANGLO American will invest in upgrading its existing plant and undertake brownfields expansion to ramp up production from its mines around Moranbah in Queensland.

The company, which has decided to retain the coal business after initially deciding to divest its coal assets two years ago, now believes there are good growth prospects for its Queensland coal operations.

"We have a low capital growth option to further increase the Moranbah-Grosvenor complex plant capacity by around 25% over the next few years," a company spokesperson told Australia's Mining Monthly.

"This will enable us to maximise throughput, as Grosvenor mine ramps up to full capacity and we continue productivity measures at Moranbah North mine."

In addition, the Moranbah South project is one of the company's long-term growth options.

"We are in the early concept stages and are considering future low-cost and innovative development options, drawing on innovation opportunities and our expertise as Australia's largest underground coal miner," the spokesperson said.

"We also have other brownfield options in the portfolio including the extension of mine life at Grasstree Capcoal complex and a pit extension option at our Dawson mine to further optimise that operation."
