PILBARA iron ore giant Rio Tinto has teamed up with local Aboriginal business North West Alliance in a multi-year, multi-million dollar waste management contract.

NWA is a joint venture between Aboriginal-owned sustainable development advisor Our Country, and global environmental solutions provider Veolia.

Under the strategic partnership NWA will provide waste management services at Rio Tinto's 16 mine sites and two ports in the Pilbara.

NWA will be responsible for management of recyclables, general hazardous waste, hydrocarbon waste and non-hazardous general waste; and also provide site services.

By consolidating to a single supplier Rio Tinto expects to improve logistical efficiency, reduce associated environmental impacts and further drive the focus on safety performance.
