The 31-year-old contractor sustained a head injury.

Ambulances were called to the site in the early hours of Saturday morning and the miner was transported to Mackay Base Hospital and then to Townsville Hospital.

In a statement BMA confirmed a contractor from Independent Mining Services died as a result of injuries sustained in an incident that occurred during maintenance work at the Goonyella Riverside mine on August 5 2017.

“We extend our deepest sympathies and support to his family, colleagues and friends at this very sad and difficult time,” it said.

“A full investigation is underway and BMA will continue to work closely with relevant authorities.

“Support services are in place for family, friends, the contractors involved and all of our people at Goonyella Riverside mine.”

Queensland mines inspectors have been at the mine since the weekend investigating the cause and nature of the incident.

“Every worker in Queensland deserves the right to come home from work safely each day,” Minister for Natural Resources and Mines Dr Anthony Lynham said.
