An unidentified source stating he was a NS worker told local newspaper the Bluefield Daily Telegraph that he and others at the Pocahontas and Virginian divisions were informed of the move the same day.
While the company has not yet released details, spokesman Robin Chapman told the paper that the layoffs would impact coal service and train service employees
The Pocahontas Division was once NS’ freight car load leader.
However, scarce mining permit approvals, a shift from coal to natural gas in electricity generation, and a global drop in demand have all created a perfect storm for the industry and communities of southern West Virginia and southwest Virginia.
Chapman told the Telegraph that Norfolk Southern has offered the displaced workers opportunities at one of seven other areas in its system, including Chicago; Elkhart, Indiana; Toledo and Cleveland, Ohio; and Conway, Altoona and Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
He noted, however, that those transfers require permanent relocation.
An ILN request for more information was not immediately returned.
