The company said late last week in its June performance report that it loaded 820 coal trains last month in the SPRB, versus 982 loaded in June 2011.

While SPRB loadings dropped, shipments from UP’s other main service area, the Colorado-Utah region, was up slightly to 225 trains in June compared to 209 last year.

UP cited one issue that put a pinch on its operations last month, the June 27 derailment of some of its cars near Junction City, Kansas on an eastbound route from Colorado.

The track was reopened on June 29 following the clearing of the accident and trains were rerouted during that time via North Platte, Nebraska.

UP’s operation area encompasses 23 states in the western two-thirds of the US.

Burlington Northern Santa Fe and UP are the two largest shippers for the western coalfields.
