Remembering Crandall Canyon in photos

MONDAY marked five years since six miners were trapped inside the Crandall Canyon mine following a collapse on August 6, 2007. Ten days after the rescue attempt started, another coal outburst left three rescuers dead and injured six others. ILN’s Donna Caudill recently visited the memorial at the Utah mine.

Because rescue efforts were called off in the days following the second collapse, the bodies of all those killed remain entombed underground at the mine, which has been closed since the accident.

The following images are from the memorial site at the Crandall Canyon complex in Huntington Canyon.
