Maptek releases VULCAN 4

AUSTRALIAN-based international software developer Maptek has released the latest version of its VULCAN 3D mine planning and modelling software.

VULCAN 4 offers a new Windows-compliant interface which runs on the NT, 2000 and XP platforms with speed, power and stability. Maptek claims long-term VULCAN users will feel comfortable migrating to the new improved version which is ultra-modern yet user-friendly. New VULCAN users can readily manoeuvre through the panels and pop-up windows to achieve incredible results in less time.

“VULCAN was ground-breaking more than 20 years ago; it has now evolved into the most advanced three-dimensional generic modelling package on the market,” according to Maptek’s Australasian manager, Don Vreugdenburg.

“All mining operations collect vast amounts of data, which must be dealt with and converted to useful output for decision making. With VULCAN you can handle a wide range of data, create a model, then view it interactively, analyse it and present output in various formats.”

“VULCAN 4 is more than just a pretty face, we’ve included thousands of enhancements to make operators more productive.”

VULCAN Explorer allows for better data organisation and quicker access to data files. The tree layout and drag-drop ability makes it a breeze to manage and load data.

A new database editor reflects the Windows environment while adding functionality to existing database attributes. Users will find it easier to maintain drillhole databases, and connect to corporate databases using ODBC. Powerful tools enable easy data manipulation and editing.

The company said VULCAN’s reputation for efficient handling of very large datasets is further enhanced with even smoother and faster rotation, zoom and pan.

New translucent triangulations and dynamic slicing are standout features for enhanced 3D visualisation during mine planning and design.

New dragline rehandling module and coal washability functions are targeted specifically at coal users and all the coal products are integrated under the one interface to allow seamless work flows.

The new block model utility allows simultaneous viewing of all parameters set for block estimation files, with streamlined updating of values.

A new batch plotting interface allows for improved plotting and Windows standard plot drivers offer fast and effortless plot setup and printing. Digitiser support is easier by including support for Wintab drivers.

Context menus allow users to right click on an object, triangulation or grid and edit it immediately from a pop-up menu.

The integrated nature of VULCAN means that multiple modules can be accessed within the one interface for optimal efficiency.

“V4 is the culmination of months of rigorous development and industry input. Our recent merger with ASI/MineSuite and the continued success of I-SiTE, our 3D laser imaging system, have reinforced Maptek’s aim to continue providing the best hardware and software solutions for the mining industry,” said Maptek managing director, Dr Bob Johnson.
