The name of the individual has not been disclosed to ILN, but it has been confirmed the incident involving a 19-year-old black hat miner occurred at Rockspring Development’s Camp Creek No. 1 Ben Haley portal in Wayne County.

“[T]he victim was a … roof bolter who was injured when the drill steel broke as he was bolting the mine top,” West Virginia Office of Miners’ Health, Safety and Training spokeswoman Leslie Fitzwater said.

The incident occurred at about 11pm, and it was not clear if anyone else received injuries.

The miner was taken to nearby St Mary’s Hospital.

No update on condition was available Wednesday from the WVOMHST or the US Mine Safety and Health Administration.
