Jackson County Sheriff’s Department deputy Kevin Huffman told the Associated Press that the loaded Union Pacific train lost seven of its cars in De Soto at about 3.30pm.

Cranes arrived at about 11pm local time to lift the derailed cars from the tracks.

A UP spokesman told local news station KFVS that the train was traveling from Wyoming to a southern Illinois utility, and that no coal was lost as the cars did not fall completely over.

He added on Wednesday morning that track work, which was performed overnight Tuesday, was expected to be complete and the line reopened to traffic about noon.
