Quiet Quecreek anniversary projected

ELEVEN years after a group of nine miners trapped in a water-inundated Pennsylvania coal mine were rescued, the marking of the “Quecreek Miracle” is expected to pass in a low-key manner.

Hundreds turned out to celebrate last July’s 10-year anniversary of “Nine for Nine” near Somerset, Pennsylvania, complete with speeches by three of the rescued workers but Quecreek Mine Rescue Foundation director Bill Arnold said there were no significant plans for this week’s anniversary.

“We worked so hard and so long for the 10th anniversary and we’re looking forward to the 15th but the years in between will be smaller observances,” he told local paper the Daily American.

The public is invited, however, to a flag ceremony on July 27 at the rescue site.

The 10am remembrance will be conducted by a local Boy Scout troop and attendees are welcome to speak freely.

Rescuers made their way through the overburden of the Quecreek operation in southern Pennsylvania and lifted nine miners to safety in a rescue capsule on July 24, 2002 after more than three days trapped in an air pocket, surrounded by more than 50 million gallons of water.

The Arnolds, who own the farm where the rescue took place, have since opened a visitor center with many items on display, including the rescue capsule.

The center is open to the public and is operated mostly by volunteers.
