Jones, whose new role starts July 8, joined Spring Creek surface coal mine in 2007. He was production manager at Kennecott Utah Copper before that.
His role at Spring Creek will be filled by David Schwend, the mine’s maintenance manager.
Meanwhile at Cliff, Byrne has been with the company for 34 years and has held his vice-presidency since 2004.
He will not be lost to the miner immediately, opting to assume a year-long consultancy role upon retirement.
Cliffs director of global government relations, Raga Elim, will succeed Byrne.
