According to the Associated Press and regional news outlet BNO News, ten other people were also injured in the accident near Zywiec in southern Poland on Wednesday. The crew had been working at the Myslowice-Merry underground coal operation.

The truck in the collision was transporting timber.

No names have been released for any the workers killed or injured, and officials told the AP that some of the injured remained in critical condition on Thursday.

A police spokesperson told BPO the incident happened at about 9.30pm local time. Seven of the fatalities were instant, and the eighth victim died later at a medical center.

The cause of the collision was not immediately known by officials, the outlet added, but accident investigators feel the truck may have veered into the lane of the miners’ Mercedes Sprinter bus.
