Besten first joined one of Arch’s predecessor companies in 1972 and has since served in many roles across marketing, trading, technology, strategy, finance and administration.

He will retire in June.

“He has contributed significantly to our corporate strategy and has mentored many members of our organization's leadership team over the years and in doing so has left an indelible mark on the organization,” chairman and chief executive officer Steven Leer said.

Arch president and incoming CEO John Eaves said Besten’s leadership, business acumen and counsel would be missed by the producer.

“He has been an invaluable member of the Arch team for many, many years,” he said.

Besten served as a member of Arch’s senior officer team since Arch Coal was established in 1997.

He was also a leadership team member for Ashland Coal from 1986 until its merger with Arch in 1997.

Besten is also known for his leadership through the company’s integration efforts following its 2011 takeover of International Coal Group.

“Under Henry's strong leadership, the Arch team set a new standard for integrating newly acquired operations in a manner that was fast, efficient and durable,” Leer said.
