CRI English reported head of the coal industry administration for Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region Wang Jian as saying coal output in the region would rise on the back of new coal production projects coming to fruition in 2012.

Jian cited an open pit mine by China's largest coal producer Shenhua Group as one the major upcoming coal developments for the region.

Approximately 20Mt of total coal exports from the region in 2011 were transported out of Xinjiang to neighbouring regions in China.

The autonomous region reportedly holds 2.19 trillion tonnes of coal, some 40% of the country's total coal resources.
