Extensive use of Nulec fibre-optic cable connectors at central Queensland mine Moranbah North for underground communication has attracted the attention of two other major Bowen Basin mines, according to Nulec. In addition, an OEM is understood to be assessing the connectors for use on mining equipment which will utilise multiple cameras connected by fibre optics.

The "hermaphroditic" connectors were extremely flexible, Nulec said. "Plugs can function as either a plug or receptacle to fit any system design. Cable assemblies can be daisy chained together to provide the required length of cable for each specific deployment condition. Damaged cable sections can be removed and replaced just like any other mining electrical cable."

An innovative feature of the product is a removable cap designed to eliminate termini contamination.
