UK-BASED Baldwin & Francis (B&F) have entered the US longwall market with new electrical solutions.

Staff Reporter

B&F have secured an agreement with RAD Engineering of Bristol, Virginia, USA as a technology provider for the US coal mining market.

RAD Engineering is a manufacturer of electrical equipment including load centres, power centres and longwall controllers for use in underground mining, including Permissible type X (explosion proof) equipment.

The two companies formed the alliance following a series of meetings in February this year and immediately achieved success with the first order for a longwall controller. The order includes B&F’s draw out starter solution together with integrated protection and control for use at 4160 V.

The solution has many exciting new features included to meet the latest international & MSHA safety requirements, these including the ability to fully withdraw the starters from off the bus-bars and the outgoing circuit without opening the explosion proof enclosure.

The action of withdrawing the starter also results in the outgoing circuit being connected to earth and provides visible contact disconnection to provide the user with a positive method of isolation and earthing the outgoing circuit without the need for disconnecting the outgoing cable or having separate earth switches installed in Explosion proof enclosures.
