BHP posts $6.4 billion loss

IMPAIRMENTS related to BHP Billiton’s US oil and gas business, financial impacts related to the Samarco disaster and global tax matters have led the company to suffer a $US6.4 ($A8.3) billion loss.

The impairment against the carrying value of the onshore US assets was by far the biggest impact at $US4.4 billion. The Samarco impact was $2.2 billion and the tax impairment $550 million.
