Conveyor back up and running at Consol complex

THREE weeks after a conveyor belt collapse stifled operations at Consol Energy’s Bailey preparation facility in southwest Pennsylvania, production has resumed at its associated mines.

Officials said the first of two collapsed belts had been returned to service, which enabled the high-producing Bailey and Enlow Fork longwall mines it serves to operate an estimated 60% capacity.

Rail shipments also started Thursday.

The replacement of the second collapsed belt is estimated to be finished the week of September 3, at which time the plant will be brought back to full production.

Consol did not provide updates or additional comment on any domestic or international spot sales or shipments impacted during the stoppage. It did, however, confirm earlier this month that no domestic sales curtailments were expected.

No-one was injured in the structural failure of two recently installed overland conveyor belts July 30.

No cause for the collapse has been released.

Both Enlow Fork and Bailey, which extract steam coal from the prolific Pittsburgh 8 seam, consistently rank among the top producing mines in the US.

Enlow Fork totaled 10.2 million tons of output last year, and Bailey produced 10.6Mt.
