The recent acquisition of a stake of Hancock Coal’s Galilee basin assets by the giant Indian GVK group has opened up possibilities for development of the nearby Eromanga basin, according to company director David Round.

“The board of ICX (International Coal) welcomes the ongoing reports regarding development of infrastructure in the adjacent Galilee Basin, as outlined in the recent reports concerning the GVK group’s $1.26 billion investment in a number of Hancock Coal projects that border the Eromanga Basin,” he said.

“ICX understands that Hancock Coal is well advanced in its plans to develop a rail line from its projects in the Galilee Basin to various ports. The ICX board intends to undertake dialogue in the future regarding the potential for rail access to the Eromanga Basin and specifically to its flagship EPC 2197 project and potential additional exploration permits.”

ICX is also seeking to extend its presence in the under-explored Eromanga Basin coal region by applying for a number of exploration permits for coal in the Charleville and Quilpie surrounding districts of Queensland.

In total, the applications cover some 8,800 square kilometres and the company believes these applications complement its existing EPC 2197 at South Blackall.

ICX will be outlining its plans for ongoing exploration in the region following the completion of its current drill program at EPC 2197 in South Blackall, Round said.
