Fire down below

A FAILED universal joint has been identified as the cause of an engine fire on a load haul dump machine at an underground coal mine in New South Wales.

Fire down below

In the dangerous incident, the LHD was travelling out of the mine while pulling an empty roof support trailer.

The driver smelled smoke and then spotted flames under the engine, coming from the engine bay.

The fire was later extinguished.

Initial investigations found a failed universal joint caused the fire.

The NSW Resources Regulator reminded mine operators to ensure universal joints are included in maintenance schedules.
