Winchester South could go underground

WHITEHAVEN Coal, which last week bought a 75% stake in Winchester South project in Queensland from Rio Tinto for US$200 million, may be able to take the planned open cut mine underground, according to Rio Tinto’s exploration report.

Whitehaven will be seeking to explore further at Winchester South.

The acquisition could lift Whitehaven's coal production by 7.5 million tonnes a year when the open pit coal mine is fully developed.
