Truck tray takes out power lines

THE New South Wales Resources Regulator has reminded heavy equipment operators to stay clear of overhead power lines following a dangerous incident at a quarry recently.

A dump truck driver was lucky to escape injury when he drove under high voltage, live overhead power lines with the tray still raised, hitting the lines and pulling them to the ground as his truck continued to drive forward.

The regulator said operators should always evaluate the risks of undertaking activities near overhead power lines, no matter how often they carry out the particular activity.

Sites should also have controls to stop equipment violating safe approach distances, which could include alternate travel routes or work sites; limits on maximum height for any equipment that travels or is transported below or near overhead power lines; and warning signs or barriers for overhead power lines, including safe height limits.
