Battery boosting

DEMAND is building for Epiroc’s Scooptam ST18 SG, the most powerful loader in the original equipment manufacturer’s battery-electric vehicle fleet.

According to Epiroc the loader features up to 50% higher installed battery capacity compared to other OEMs, meaning fewer stops for charging or battery swapping.

Its battery features both active and passive safety systems.

The 18t loader, part of Epiroc's Smart and Green series, features the company's second generation battery-electric drive train that was proven in the field with the ST14 SG.

The SG series combines the battery-electric drive train with Epiroc's Rig Control System, meaning the machines are prepared for automation and remote control.

Epiroc Underground Division global product manager Erik Gert said interest from customers had been extensive and several loaders were already booked.

"The very first of these machines will be delivered to Boliden's developing Rävliden mine in Sweden," he said.

"Compared to using a fossil-fueled loader with similar capacity, the Scooptram ST18 SG eliminates 365t of carbon dioxide emissions annually.

"It also reduced heat, noise and the need for ventilation, which is crucial as mines become increasingly deeper."
