CMTE's board approved the promotion of Lever to this newly created position at a meeting on December 7.

In July , he was appointed CMTE's mining systems program leader. He will continue on in that role, with expanded responsibilities.

Before joining the centre, Lever was associate professor and head of the Department of Mining and Geological Engineering at the University of Arizona.

After visiting the CMTE for five weeks from July to August 1999, Lever felt his interests in robotic and automated mining systems, intelligent data analysis techniques and computer applications in mining were well matched to the CMTE's research areas.
