Task rotation key to improving health at Mandalong

IN AN industry first, Centennial Coal, Coal Services Health and the University of Newcastle have run a 12-month trial in “task rotation” at two underground mines in New South Wales.

The task rotation at Mandalong involved people alternating between jobs to lessen the risk of injuries.

Centennial Coal's Springvale was the control mine while the trial was conducted at its Mandalong mine. 
 
The trial came about after the company approached CS Health for assistance in addressing musculoskeletal stress among employees. 
 
The result has made Centennial and Coal Services Health finalists in the NSW Minerals Council Health Safety Environment and Community Awards. 
 
"Working in an underground coal mine is physically demanding, and involves a range of repetitive manual handling tasks," the NSW Minerals Council said.
