The Coal Research Initiative received the same level of funding as FY05, in line with the government’s 10-year, $2 billion commitment.

Also receiving a significant share was the clean coal demonstration projects with $50 million and FutureGen with $18 million.

Carbon sequestration emerged as one of the highest priorities in the Fossil Energy R&D program, a priority reflected in the proposed budget of $67.2 million in FY06, a nearly 50% increase over FY05.

Hydrogen research also received a boost with funding increased 27% to $22 million.

Existing coal plants received $24 million to produce short-term reductions in emissions of mercury, nitrogen oxide, particulate matter and byproducts of combustion.

Gasification technology's budget increased by nearly 25% to $56.4 million and fuel cell technology received $65 million with much of the funding concentrated on the Solid State Energy Conversion Alliance (SECA).
