Rio, Xstrata and Anglo have all signed 10-year take-or-pay contracts for all production from Moranbah, giving Dyno the security it required to get the project off the ground.

Commissioning will start in the fourth quarter of 2008 and production will ramp up to commence from the first quarter of 2009.

Explosives manufacturers have enjoyed strong demand and prices as opencut coal mine expansions and new developments pressure already tight supply. Concerns have been raised with the new plant, and the opening of a plant in Indonesia by Orica, that there could be an oversupply of the market in 2009.

Dyno Nobel already operates six ammonium nitrate plants in Canada and one in the US, as well as a joint venture managed plant in Queensland.
