Underground mines produced 1.5Mt during the month, down on the 1.9Mt produced in October 2004.
Coal exports totaled 12.475Mt in October with coking coal making up 8.657Mt and thermal coal the rest. Just over 2Mt of coal was used within Queensland for a range of uses, primarily for power generation.
Over a third of exports were shipped through Dalrymple Bay, followed by Gladstone which exported 3.5Mt, Hay Point 2.9Mt and Abbot Point 1.2Mt.
The number of people employed by the state’s coal industry was 16 791 during the month compared with 13 945 the previous October.
Japan was the state’s main coal export destination taking 5.2Mt of coal during October, followed by Korea which took 2.1Mt of coal, and India which took 1.5Mt.
