Mackay newspaper the Daily Mercury reported some 18 of MCG’s 30 operator jobs were made redundant, with six being redeployed to other projects.
The newspaper said the workers were from either the Millennium mine or BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance’s Poitrel mine; however, Peabody has announced production cutbacks while BMA has not.
The flying squad, made up of government officials, was created last month to help miners who lost their jobs from Macarthur Coal and Xstrata Coal.
A spokesperson for Regional Development and Industry Minister Desley Boyle told the newspaper assistance was there for the affected workers and the squad will make sure they get their entitlements.
Reportedly the dismissed MCG contractors, who worked at mudflats near Poitrel and Millennium, were told the news after their shift at 6pm yesterday.
The flying squad – a mobile team of cross-agency representatives – was announced by Queensland Premier Anna Bligh last month as part of a program to travel to affected areas to offer support to displaced workers.
