The coalyard expansion project is part of the port’s plans for managing growing coal exports from Solid Energy and mines on the west coast, such as Pike River Coal.

 

LPC said the project would also allow for larger stockpiles of different coal products.

 

The project is aiming for 10 hectares of reclamation, but initial expansion might involve a smaller 3ha reclamation from the bay.

 

Pike said the project would not affect existing port operations or customers.
