While the worker’s name has not been released, West Virginia Office of Miners’ Health, Safety and Training spokesperson Leslie Fitzwater told ILN that the incident had occurred at Midland Trail Energy’s BC No. 1 mine in Kanawha County.
“A piece of rock fell between the roof bolts and struck the individual,” she said.
“The miner was alert and talking before being taken to the hospital.”
No further information on the worker’s condition was available Wednesday afternoon.
The mine is controlled by Patriot Coal. A company spokesperson did not return an ILN request for comment by press time.
According to federal data, the bituminous operation produced more than 730,000 tons, and recorded four non-fatal days lost operator injuries and one NFDL contractor injury in 2010.
