US Mine Safety and Health Administration spokesperson Amy Louviere told ILN Wednesday one unnamed loader operator went into convulsions at the Republic Energy operation in Carbon, Kanawha County, lost control of the unit and rammed a tractor trailer, overturning the truck.
State Office of Miners’ Health, Safety and Training spokesperson Leslie Fitzwater added in an ILN interview that the coal truck driver was trapped inside the cab after overturning, and the security officer was injured while assisting with the rescue.
None of the injuries were life-threatening, both agencies reported, although Louviere said the loader operator, who was convulsing during and after the 7.45pm incident, was still in the hospital for testing Wednesday.
State officials said late Tuesday night that the truck driver was expected to be released after treatment, but neither office could confirm prior to press time if the worker had been discharged.
None of the workers’ names have been released.
The Republic Energy surface complex, which produced 3.1 million tons last year, is operated by Massey Energy subsidiary Elk Run Coal.
The mine had four non-fatal days lost operator injuries in 2010, as well as seven NFDL contractor injuries and one contractor fatality. As of the first quarter of 2011, the mine had reported one NFDL contractor injury.
