Carbomine was injected into a rib line as a precautionary sealing measure to prevent spontaneous combustion after air passages through the coal pillar had found elevated heat.

Tasman mine site manager Keith Falconer said “the product proved itself to be an ideal low temperature sealing solution”

Minova Australia business development manager Tom Meikle said the first application went as well as could be expected and he was especially pleased at the low system pressures observed during application, and the leaking product temperature observed through a thermal imager of less than 20C.

Carbomine has a very low exothermic temperature of less than 40C, and during the application Zero Phenol and Formaldehyde was detected.

The strata penetration and bond strength characteristics of Carbomine made it an ideal choice for this specific application, Meikle said.

Carbomine is a two component phenolic injection resin system mixed at a 4:1 ratio, which enables the application equipment to also be used for pumping Minova’s Carbofill cavity filling foam.

The dual use of the same application equipment ensures a substantial time saving in the set up for applications requiring both products.

Carbomine, which is New South Wales Department of Industry & Investment approved, has been developed specifically for Australian underground coal mining conditions and is fully LOBA compliant.

It was developed in co-ordination with Minova’s global centre of excellence.

This application was completed by experienced personnel from Minova’s NSW operations and technology teams.
