United Kingdom publication The Guardian reported Paul Milner was working with four men on a disused coal face at about noon on Saturday as the mine completed a longwall move.
Milner was crushed by a rock fall after hydraulic support was lowered. He received medical treatment at the scene but later died in hospital.
The Guardian reported Milner had 27 years experience in the mining industry and an onsite investigation into his death was launched on Monday morning.
The Welbeck Colliery is owned by UK coal and has a staff of 400. Its operations were suspended on Monday but were expected to resume on Tuesday.
