The fire at the Hazelwood brown coal mine in the Latrobe Valley started at 1pm on Sunday and it is expected to burn until Wednesday, the Country Fire Authority told International Longwall News.
One hundred fire fighters and 30 trucks are keeping the fire under control through the use of water.
A CFA spokeswoman told ILN the fire was in a disused, non-operational part of the mine so it was not impacting power or infrastructure.
The cause of the fire has yet to be determined.
The mine produces around 18 million tonnes of brown coal to power the adjacent Hazelwood power station.
Victoria has had several coal mine fires over the past five years but the CFA said none were significant.
