The Mining Drive is the company’s latest addition to its industrial gear unit range and was released at this year’s Asia-Pacific International Mining Exhibition.

SEW-Eurodrive industrial gears national product manager Ian Tribe said the Mining Drive would fill the need for heavy-duty applications with high-transmitted loads in mining and quarrying processes.

“The industry needs energy-saving measures as much as the next, maybe even more so,” Tribe said.

“Heavy industry as a rule requires machinery with more torque and more power, hence requiring larger amounts of energy to run their facilities.”

Tribe said the Mining Drive’s internal energy reducing features included a cast-iron housing and increased thermal ratings, which drove down heat losses and reduced overall energy.

“These features result in less heat to be dissipated by the housing,” he said.

“The special housing is then designed with larger dimensions and extensive ribbing on both sides and underneath in order to dissipate the heat that is generated more effectively.”

The pioneering unit can also increase thermal ratings, which up until now, where only achievable by gear units fitted with complex oil pump and external heat exchanger systems.

Tribe said this achieved lower running temperatures, which could enable a longer oil life.

The Mining Drive is available as a stand-alone gear unit or as part of a complete drive assembly.
