The plant at Ukhaa Khudag is designed to produce 15 million tonnes of coal per annum at full capacity.

Called UHG, the mine is expected to be one of the world’s larger coking coal mines when it reaches full production next year.

Sedgman had to create a custom solution to maximise coking coal product yield in a region where temperatures range from -40C to more than 40C in summer, with frequent wind and dust storms.

Chair of the National Engineering Excellence Awards judging panel, Ian Pedersen, said: “[The UHG project] set new Australian engineering benchmarks in the design and construction of coal-handling plants and demonstrates why Australia’s engineering capability is now world-renowned and is being sought internationally”

Sedgman managing director and chief executive officer Nick Jukes said UHG had been the company’s first Mongolian CHPP project.
