The head office will be the centre for all of Esso’s PNG activities, with construction to start this year.

Leighton told the market this morning that there would be a peak construction force of about 360, with approximately 80% of the workforce to be locals.

It said the contract win diversified its business in PNG while still aligning with the big boys of PNG.

“The successful award of this project is representative of our long-term growth strategy to diversify our operations within the emerging PNG market, and align ourselves with clients and project partners sharing our high standards of safety, environmental management and quality,” managing director Craig Laslett said.

“Our team is extremely pleased to bring our core capabilities in building and construction to this project, as well as our engineering ingenuity and strong project management.”

The contract win adds momentum for Leighton, which late last year secured $923 million worth of work with to undertake the Ichthys project onshore LNG facilities’ main civil works in Blaydin Point, Darwin.

It also has won a $280 million, four-year operations and maintenance contract for the temporary site facilities works at Blaydin Point.

Esso Highlands is the PNG subsidiary of ExxonMobil.
