The Advanced Energy Life Campaign will implement a number of strategies, including full-page ads in daily newspapers, to raise awareness of the issue of global energy poverty.

The campaign emphasises on the role of coal power in reducing energy poverty.

Coal is the world’s most abundant source. Therefore, Peabody argues clean coal technologies are the key to providing low-cost electricity while embracing technologies to reduce emissions.

"Coal is a fundamental environmental solution when turned into electricity and synthetic natural gas at large scale," Peabody chairman Greg Boyce said.

“Coal-fuelled electricity and synthetic natural gas can eliminate widespread deforestation from gathering biomass, as well as the devastating effects of energy poverty."

In Australia, Peabody intends to pressure the government to end the carbon tax, scale back renewable energy targets and drive down prices, in order to restore jobs and bring back the country’s competitive market.

In the US, the company’s aim is to reduce fuel prices so fewer people need government help to pay their energy bills.

A Peabody spokesman said the company would achieve the highest level of success if it could change the global conversation to focus on energy poverty as the world’s number one human and environmental crisis.

Peabody has a long history of advancing balanced energy policy through leadership in the International Energy Agency’s Coal Industry Advisory Board, the World Bank, the World Energy Congress and a number of other policy forums.

It is reaching out to stakeholders in the US, Australia, Europe and China.

Engaging meaningful allies in this effort through OECD nations, the G20, world banks, multi-national organisations and others will be a key measure of success.
