The diesel engine range is headed by a 2.8 litre version with maximum torque of up to 450 Newton metres. That is up 25% on the previous 3 litre engine. The 2.4 litre version has maximum torque of 400Nm.

All four Hilux engines are Euro 5 compliant.

Rear leaf springs are 100mm longer and mounted wider for a more comfortable ride. The attachment point of the rear suspension has been moved forward 100mm and 25mm lower.

Rear wheel articulation has been improved by up to 20%. Offroad ability has also been improved by the fitment of a rear differential lock on the 4x4 SR and SR5, and improved approach and departure angles on most utes.

Ground clearance is 279mm on 4x4 extra and double cabs.

Toyota expects the maximum five-star ANCAP safety rating will extend across the range. There is a reversing camera on the basic ute model and an accessory camera available on cab-chassis models. The Hilux will also have seven airbags – including driver’s knee protection – vehicle stability and traction control, anti-skid brakes with brake assist and trailer sway control.

Toyota Australia executive director of sales and marketing Tony Cramb said the ute was ideally suited to Australian customers.
