Carbon Energy’s technology had even received the green light from the state’s chief scientist.

However, the Queensland government had other ideas.

QRC CEO Michael Roche said despite confirmation that Carbon Energy’s technology was successful and environmentally safe, Queensland would not enjoy the economic benefits that came with building this energy industry.

“Carbon Energy has spent more than eight years and $150 million proving its innovative technology,” he said.

“The technology was developed in conjunction with the CSIRO, and successfully demonstrated in a process set by the Queensland government and with oversight by a government-appointed Independent Scientific Panel.”

In April the QRC was shocked by the unexpected government announcement of a blanket ban on underground coal gasification, without releasing evidence to “justify the rash decision,” Roche said.

“The decision raises questions for innovative businesses operating in Queensland, as well as the state’s ability to attract future investment,” he said.

“Now, with science on its side, Carbon Energy will look to continue its investment in other jurisdictions, taking with it potential jobs that could have gone to Queenslanders.”
