The machine, which is the first original equipment manufacturer-supplied diesel scoop to be approved for underground use in West Virginia, features the cleanest power pack available for underground mining with a vent rate of 7500 cubic feet per minute – nearly half that of its closest competitor in the sector.

The 488D XP also reduces emissions by more than 66%; the unit’s particulate index is 4500cfm.

The 16-ton lift capacity scoop has the lowest mine-approved scoop operating height, which offers flexibility but also increases operator visibility. Because it is powered by diesel, the machine can be used in severe conditions without the need for battery changes, charges, cooling or time-consuming maintenance.

The ergonomically designed Bucyrus machine can negotiate gradients that would otherwise overheat electric tram motors and drive components, and a four-speed power shift transmission allows tramming speed and torque to be adjusted as needed.

Spring-applied hydraulic release brakes for 0.5g deceleration and a quiet engine and exhaust system provide efficient operation as well as a comfortable and healthy ride.

Bucyrus said that the 488D XP LHD, along with its notable lift capacity, also featured a vertical lift of 60 inches for easy transfer point dumps which could be performed without additional equipment. The flexible machine can be rapidly fitted with numerous attachments with the Bucyrus Quick Attach System.

The unit’s axle is load rated for 39t and its rolling element oscillation bearing is rated at 29t axial and 66t radial.

The Un-A-Trac 488D XP diesel scoop has much in common with its battery-powered counterpart, the Un-A-Trac 488-6, which aids maintenance. The diesel version’s 150hp turbocharged, aftercooled engine is equipped with a flameproof electronics package and is cooled by an 8-fin-per-inch, triple-pass radiator assembly.

The operator’s noise exposure is reduced via an analog temperature control system that manages the machine’s cooling fan demand and response.

Finally, the unit’s cooling system is pressure-wash capable up to 3000psi. It does not need a surge tank, as the expansion tanks have been developed with a flooded inlet design. Cleaning and maintenance are also easy with access panels and a finger grid surrounding the machine’s cooling core.
