The Maplecroft CII is a family of three indices calculated by Bloomberg.
It ranks top-performing US companies in terms of climate-related innovation and carbon management programs.
The indices include the Maplecroft CII Benchmark, the Maplecroft CII Leaders and the Maplecroft CII US 100.
Cliffs legal, government affairs and sustainability executive vice-president Kelly Tompkins said the recognition acknowledged the company’s greenhouse gas planning and commitment to environmental stewardship.
To be considered for and ranked in the Maplecroft CII, companies have to display superiority in management, mitigation, emission reduction, adaptation and have a strong innovation focus.
The Maplecroft CII was compiled through a climate screen of all US companies ($US1 billion or more in market capitalisation) against more than 100 different criteria.
Stocks were rated using various public disclosures and supported by third-party stakeholder viewpoints and direct engagement with the companies.
While Cliffs is better known for its iron ore production, the company is also a significant producer of high and low-volatile metallurgical coal.
