The directory compiles recent, current or planned projects in onshore natural gas geology, water, coexistence and social and environmental impacts.

Centre director Professor Andrew Garnett said the directory would be a valuable tool for researchers and the wider community.

“The directory makes it much easier for researchers to coordinate their efforts and maximise the value of their research, and until now it has been hard to determine how much research is being done on any particular topic, location or resource,” Garnett said.

“This will also provide community members with a single source to find up-to-date information on projects in their area.”

He said that more than 400 research projects on CSG and other unconventional gas developments were being conducted at about 50 Australian institutions. Energy News has recently reported on two of them, around interactions between landholders and upstream operators and the conclusions they came to about the LNG companies’ openness and accountability.

“The pace of development means that keeping track of research has been a challenge,” Garnett said.

“Research has been conducted by a range of organisations including universities, government agencies, resource companies and non-profit organisations.”
