As part of the contract SITA will provide waste management and resource recovery solutions to Rio Tinto's Hail Creek, Clermont, Blair Athol and Kestrel Coal operations, among others.

The contract commenced on April 1 and has two one-year renewal options.

The company said the partnership was a big win for its Queensland business as growth within the resources and mining sector was part of its strategy.

SITA Queensland general manager Peter Hudson said cost efficiencies and proven service delivery were two major factors in winning the tender.

SITA has also partnered with Keep Queensland Beautiful in an education program to raise awareness of waste issues in schools.

A recent study found Queensland was the most littered mainland state in Australia and Hudson said the initiative, which includes SITA's free WastEd Time program of curriculum-linked activities and tours, aims to teach children the importance of litter prevention, waste reduction and recycling.

"The last 10 years have seen a growing need to engage with community on all levels to increase awareness of waste as an environmental issue," he said.
