In its newest data released on Thursday, the agency said US coal production totalled approximately 19.3 million tonnes last week, about 0.9% higher than last week's estimate and 0.4% over the comparable week of 2012.

Using the Mississippi River as a split point, the EIA said producers east of the waterway produced 8.1Mt while the western US coalfields totalled 11.2Mt.

However, despite the continued increases, the big picture still shows a road ahead.

US year-to-date coal production, it said, totalled 822.4Mt for the week, 2.1% lower than the comparable year-to-date production last year.

To compare, the agency said two weeks ago that year-to-date data for the week ended October 19 revealed 803.1Mt in US production, 2.1% higher than its comparable year-to-date coal production in 2012.

Results for this week will be released on November 7.
