Soma forced to close second mine

Addressing miners who gathered in front of the building of the regional lignite-mining authority, Turkish Coal Enterprises, Soma District Governor Bahattin Atci said all the mines in the region, including those run by other companies, would be audited thoroughly.

“If any deficiency or negligence is detected, the permissions for operating will be revoked and operations will stop immediately,” he told the group.

The widespread inspections came in response to the Soma mine disaster that took 301 lives on May 13.
