The new rig is the second-largest of its kind in Australia. It has the capacity to construct shafts 1000m deep and from 2.4m to 8m wide, making it one of just two in the country with greater than 6m capacity.

The rig, which delivers a thrust force of 10,000 kilonewtons, is considered one of the most efficient on the market because of its variable frequency drive which delivers power consumption at half the rate of an equivalent capacity machine with hydraulic drive.

PYBAR chief executive Paul Rouse said the acquisition of the rig was significant to the business moving forward.

“There are very few contractors with this level of rig capability,” he said.

“It provides us with the capability to service the largest underground mining projects in Australia with a full suite of services.

“We’re building a solid reputation in the market for exceeding productivity targets and this latest investment will ensure we continue to add value to our clients and out-perform on project schedules.”

The rig can be used to create shafts for ventilation, access, haulage and pressure shafts for hydropower plants.

It will arrive in Australia in January.
