Mine ventilation expert Albert Banes Davis, 62, is believed to have died from methane gas poisoning when he entered a previously sealed section of the mine, the Daily Star reported.

IMC has been involved with the Barapukuria coal mine since the construction phase in 1995, when it provided contract negotiation, equipment selection and construction supervision.

The mine was brought into production in 2005, with a production rate of 1 million tonnes per annum, feeding the nearby coal-fired power station.

But in late 2005, production was slowed after an alarming rise of gas in a mining zone, which led authorities to suspend operations and abandon mining equipment, the Daily Star reported.

The mine's daily production had only officially resumed on April 17, 2007.

British IMC consultant Ian Robertson was killed last month after a methane gas explosion at the Ulyanovskaya mine in Russia, where 107 others also died.
